PIPS Membership Information
The Pelican Island Preservation Society is the public support organization for the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. "Friends" groups are the only way for the public to directly support a refuge of their choice financially, as the federal government does not accept donations, other than the good efforts of volunteers. Supporting PIPS provides a means for contributing financial support to the Pelican Island NWR as we coordinate with the refuge staff and provide support for projects, events, obtaining grants, etc. We also advocate for federal government support of the entire refuge system, and especially the Pelican Island NWR!
If you would like to support PIPS, you may click here for a printable copy of our membership application. If you would like to join using your credit card or PayPal account, please see the "Make a Donation Using PayPal" information below. Membership benefits include a copy of our newsletter, which is published four times a year. Our newsletters are also posted to the "Newsletters/Library" section of our website. Current members have the option of receiving an electronic ONLY version of our newsletter by email. Doing so serves as additional support for the Pelican Island NWR as it saves us the cost of printing and postage, and also lots of time!
If you are a current member and have opted to receive our newsletter via email but are not hearing from us, please make sure we have your latest/correct email address! Just send us an email to membership-at-pelicanislandfriends.org with any new/corrected information.
You may contribute any amount you wish, with a minimum of $5 for a student membership - please see membership categories below or on the membership application. PIPS is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Additional ways of supporting Wildlife Refuges
National Wildlife Refuge Association
You may also be interested in joining the National Wildlife Refuge Association. The NWRA is an "umbrella" type organization for all of the refuge "Friends" organizations. They are "...an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve America’s wildlife heritage for future generations through strategic programs that protect, enhance, and expand the National Wildlife Refuge System and the landscapes beyond its boundaries that secure its ecological integrity."
The Federal Duck Stamp Program
"Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps, commonly known as 'Duck Stamps,' are pictorial stamps produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. They are not valid for postage. Originally created in 1934 as the federal licenses required for hunting migratory waterfowl, Federal Duck Stamps have a much larger purpose today."
"Federal Duck Stamps are a vital tool for wetland conservation. Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar generated by the sales of Federal Duck Stamps goes directly to purchase or lease wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Understandably, the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated and is a highly effective way to conserve America’s natural resources."
