PIPS Membership Information
The Pelican Island Preservation Society is the public support organization for the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. “Friends” groups are the only way for the public to directly support a refuge of their choice financially, as the federal government does not accept donations, other than the good efforts of volunteers.
Supporting PIPS provides a means for contributing financial support to the Pelican Island NWR as we coordinate with the refuge staff and provide support for projects, events, obtaining grants, etc. We also advocate for federal government support of the entire refuge system, and especially the Pelican Island NWR!
If you would like to join/support PIPS, you may mail your contribution to us, or pay online using the PayPal service – please see the “Make a Donation Using PayPal” option below.
Please see the links below this paragraph for a printable copy of our membership application or our PIPS brochure, which also has a membership form attached. Membership benefits include a copy of our newsletter, which is published four times a year.

Our newsletters are also posted to the “
Newsletters/Library“ section of our website. Current members have the option of receiving an electronic ONLY version of our newsletter by email. Doing so serves as additional support for the Pelican Island NWR as it saves us the cost of printing and postage, and lots of time!
If you are a current member and have opted to receive our newsletter via email but are not hearing from us, please make sure we have your latest/correct email address! Just send us an email to membership-at-pelicanislandfriends.org with any new/corrected information.
You may contribute any amount you wish, with a minimum of $5 for a student membership – please see membership categories below or on the membership application. PIPS is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Additional ways of supporting Wildlife Refuges:
National Wildlife Refuge Association
You may also be interested in joining the National Wildlife Refuge Association. The NWRA is an “umbrella” type organization for all of the refuge “Friends” organizations.
They are “…an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve America’s wildlife heritage for future generations through strategic programs that protect, enhance, and expand the National Wildlife Refuge System and the landscapes beyond its boundaries that secure its ecological integrity.”
The Federal Duck Stamp Program:
“Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps, commonly known as ‘Duck Stamps’, are pictorial stamps produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
They are not valid for postage. Originally created in 1934 as the federal licenses required for hunting migratory waterfowl, Federal Duck Stamps have a much larger purpose today.”
“Federal Duck Stamps are a vital tool for wetland conservation. Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar generated by the sales of Federal Duck Stamps goes directly to purchase or lease wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Understandably, the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated and is a highly effective way to conserve America’s natural resources.”
For more information about the Federal Duck Stamp Program, please visit their website at www.fws.gov/duckstamps.

PayPal™ is a payment/fund processing service. PIPS has established an account with PayPal for the purpose of being able to accept electronic payments for donations or merhcandise on our website. When you use this service, PayPal processes your payment information, whether it is using a credit card or by using your own established PayPal account.
With a PayPal account, you can have money deducted electronically from your checking account as well, to pay for online merchandise or services. Some vendors will only accept pre-payment or electonic fund transfers using PayPal. For making a donation or purchasing items from us though, establishing your own PayPal account is optional.
When you use PayPal to make an online donation or purchase from our website, PayPal processes the financial transaction and PIPS is only provided with your contact/shipping information in order to establish your membership or complete the order. We are also notified when the transfer of money is completed, but we do not have access to any of your financial information.
Please be aware of potential scam emails that you may receive. Even if you have never used PayPal you may still get, or have received in the past, emails claiming to be from PayPal, requesting you to verify or update your personal information. This is a common “phishing” scam type solicitation and you may have received similar solicitations claiming to be from most any financial institution.
Please be advised that no legitimate financial institution will ever send you an email asking for verification of your personal/financial information, especially emails that have a link that you are asked to click, to be directed to your account where you can update personal information.
You should never click on any links in emails such as these. The only way to properly access accounts that you have with any financial service is to open their “homepage” web page and log in to your account that way.
If you receive an email that appears to be a scam or phishing type solicitation, that indicates it is from PayPal, you can forward it to email@example.com to report it as a scam.
